An article appeared in the Mercury News today, Saturday, Aug. 7th, 2004
Carol (Dilloway) Hough at 57 lost her eight-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was a San Jose State University graduate who joined the County of Santa Clara Probation Department in 1970. She rose through the ranks during her 30-year career and was a manager when illness forced her retirement in 2000.
Carol was born in Rochester, N.Y. When she was 3 when her family moved to the valley and settled in Los Altos. She grew up an outdoor girl who swam competitively in her teens. As a probation officer she played soccer and softball on teams with other female officers. Even after she was diagnosed with cancer in 1996, she participated in San Jose and Santa Cruz walks to raise funds to conquer her disease.
According to the Mercury News article, Carol met her husband-to-be at work when both were rookie probation officers in 1970. The couple, each married before, wed in 1977 and made their home in Scotts Valley for the past 26 years. Richard Hough said his wife helped him raise his two daughters when they would spend weekends with him. Carol unwound from the pressures of work by playing tennis, often in mixed doubles with her husband.
The article goes on to say that when the couple traveled, Carol had a habit of reading. Getting to Tahoe was a two-book trip for her, not because he drove so slowly, her husband protested, but because she read so fast. She also worked crossword puzzles in the passenger's seat.
A room in the couple's home was devoted to Carol's passion for quilting. And, According to her husband, when doctors told Carol eight years ago that she wouldn't live long she wanted a little dog to cuddle with to help her cope. ``Munchie,'' a papillon, spent Carol's last days in bed with her while her husband played his wife's favorite music -- Christmas carols.
